# Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)

microbiology

An energy-carrying molecule found in all living cells and biological residues; the substance detected by ATP hygiene tests.

## Definition

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a nucleotide that stores and transfers energy in living cells. It is present in food residues, human and plant cells, and microorganisms. Because ATP is left behind whenever biological or organic material remains on a surface, detecting it provides an indirect indicator of cleanliness.

## Why it matters

ATP is the biological signal that ATP hygiene monitoring systems measure. Understanding what ATP is—and where it comes from—helps hygiene teams interpret test results correctly instead of treating them as a direct microbe count.

## Practical applications

ATP detection underpins rapid cleaning verification in food manufacturing, healthcare, commercial kitchens and other hygiene-sensitive environments.
